1 Belvedere - Cape Town sophistication

In Cape Town to meet fellow gay guesthouse owners is Llewellyn (left) of Durban View Guesthouse with Rob (right) of 1 Belvedere - a sophisticated men-only guesthouse at the foothills of Table Mountain.

The grand old house is superbly furnished and is owned by Charl and Rob, Dutch guys who settled in Cape Town and are one of the oldest established gay guesthouses in the city.

Shisa welcomed

Joe (left) from Shisa Guest Farm with Llewellyn
Lazy days around the pool in the tranquil setting

Open plan, chic decor
Welcoming Joe from Cape Town's Shisa Guest Farm, is Llewellyn (right) co-owner of the east coast gay Guesthouse Durban View on Joe's recent trip to Durban.

It is important to network amongst the gay-only guesthouses in South Africa - there are only about 10 of us and Shisa Guest Farm, about 80mins drive north of Cape Town in the Tulbach area is on a must-visit list. It is a men-only establishment and is where the Cape Town locals go to relax and play in a beautiful setting in the winelands area.

Pride Films in Cape Town

Not very well publicised but Ster Kinekor are halfway through their Pride Film Fest in South Africa with 2 movies left to screen in their Cinema Nouveau complexes around the country.

In Cape Town there will be a screening of The Kids are Alright on the 12th November whilst their other movie Eyes Wide Open screens only at 4 venues on the 12th (Rosebank and Cavendish) and 26th November (Brooklyn and V&A Waterfront Cape Town).

Last year I was appalled by the lack of publicity for the few films they were showing and adverts at the Cinema for the gay film fest apologised to straight patrons for the screening on one day of the year of films to suit the gay community. Poor show Ster Kinekor.

Getting to Sandy Bay in Cape Town... the beach where you take it all off... is one of our favourites. And for those who want to venture into the bushes, there is always action.

Cape Town accommodation

Pretty erotic is the horseman statue at the Rhodes Memorial in Cape Town (above). We did a quick visit to the exclusively gay guesthouses in Cape Town and here are a few pics. Unfortunately my camera got stolen at the Beefcakes restaurant and club on Friday so some of my earlier photos of the GapLeisure website launch are lost forever.. a pity.

Most of the Guesthouses are in the Oranjezicht area which is at the foothills of Table Mountain.. so the views out and about the Guesthouses are awesome.

Here Llewellyn and I are seen at the entrance to Amsterdam Guesthouse where the manager showed us around. It seemed to be one of the busier places we visited and has a courtesy bus to fetch and carry guests. Features were a lovely sundeck and pool, as well as a sauna, jacuzzi and wet-room.

Germany to Cape Town for 2010 World Cup

World Cup fever has taken over South Africa and fans have even driven to Cape Town from Germany to follow their national team in Durban, then Port Elizabeth and to the final (?). And they made the journey through Europe and Africa in a bright red Fire Truck! Check their blog here.

Not to be outdone, Netherlands fans, who have now notched up 2 wins, are sporting their Cape Town 2010 orange shirts and an orange brigade has been following them around South Africa.

JC in Cape Town

There's an awesome wine farm in the Stellenbosch wine district in the Cape - JC le Roux, South Africa's first wine farm that produces only sparkling wine - both the commercial wines with co2 injected as well as the time honoured Cap Classique method, the traditional french method of making Champagne.

We took a range of their sparkling wines to Durban on the east coast of South Africa and held a little sparkling wine and nougat tasting. In the pics are Capetonians Yvan and Quinton and in the second photo Dave and Llewellyn from Durban View Guesthouse.

Hats off to the boys from Cape Town who exhibited (ha ha, no pun) at the Indaba Tourism Show in Durban this week. The Show ended with a Pink Party at Durban View Gay Guesthouse and as you can see from the pics we all had a load of fun.

I can't remember all of the names, but will pick out some and send a link to the email addresses we collected. So if you guys are reading this and want to add a name and a link, just leave a comment or email me at durbanview@gmail.com and I will do.

So thanks Jason for organising. In the pics I see Louis, Petra, Llewellyn, Jason, 3rd pic - myself, Llewellyn and Claude, Brian and Deon, Brian and Jason at the Cape Town stand at Indaba and in the last pic friends with Jason of Tulbach. Dave

Hot Pride 2010

Not only were the boyz on the floats at Gay Pride in Cape Town sizzling hot, but the blistering sun beat down on us as we marched from the Gay Village area into the city and back again.

And the party continued until the early hours the next morning.

In the photos are from top the New Beefcakes Burger Bar who promise all that you see on their float with every hot burger..lol, the Lesbians in Cape Town who were out in force for the march, the hot ladz on the Crew bar float and below, Llewellyn (centre) representing our Durban View Gay Guesthouse (east coast city.. visiting Cape Town for Pride) and other Guests at the Decks Guesthouse in Cape Town and in the bottom photo one of the hot boyz from the Bronx bar gets my blood all heated up as we pass the Houses of Parliament bearing the Gay flag on the march.

Cape Town boy scoops Worldwide Mr Gay 2010

Cape Town's Mr Gay South Africa, Charl van den Berg, has just been selected as the new Worldwide Mr Gay 2010.

He was crowned on Valentine’s day at a gala ceremony in Oslo, Norway. The competition (previously known as Mr. Gay World) drew delegates from all over the world representing all of the continents.

Australia came second and the rest of the top five were made up of Hong Kong, Spain and China. Both Mr. Photogenic and Mr. Swimwear were won by Russia and Brazil took the Mr. Popularity title.

The competition was streamed live on the Internet to viewers from all over the world. Charl said from Oslo just before the finale started: “The competition is very tough, but I am confident.” That confidence shone through when he had to answer the main question put to the final five: “If you were to speak to an high school about sexuality, what would you tell them?”. Charl answered: “Sexuality is a private matter; regardless of what your sexuality is, we are all the same – we are all human beings.”

The 28-year-old restaurant manager from Cape Town impressed the judges and Morten Ruda, President of Mr. Gay Europe said to the organisers of the Mr. Gay South Africa™ competition: “Congratulations on your victory! He has made a deep impression on all of us here in Oslo! Well deserved. Best wishes for all his future endeavours.”

The first duty of the newly appointed Worldwide Mr. Gay will be to fly to Vancouver, Canada to take part in the festivities of the 2010 Winter Olympics. While in Vancouver and Whistler, Worldwide Mr. Gay will be an ambassador for equality and diversity while taking part in the Pride House – a safe space that brings visibility to LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual and intersex) people in sport.
